Large Intestine
Location
Large intestine starts below the
waist region in the right side of pelvis.
Function
The absorption of water and removal
of waste solids material from the body take place in this region.
Parts of Large
Intestine
It has three parts
Caecum
It is pouch like structure that
makes T-junction with the small intestine.
Colon
It is S-shaped structure that is
present after caecum. Absorption of water in blood from colon takes places.
Solids remains which are formed after the absorption of water are called faeces
which are undigested materials. Large numbers of bacteria, bile pigments,
sloughed off cells of digested tube and water is also present in faeces.
Rectum
It is the hollow muscular tube
present after the colon. In rectum, faeces are temporarily stored which ends in
anus. Anus is opened for defecation when rectum is filled up with faeces under
normal condition as a result of reflex. In adults, this reflex is under our
control but in infants it is involuntary. As infant grows and becoming big this
reflex automatically becomes in our control.
