Neuron and its Types
Neuron is the functional and structural unit of nervous
system.
Properties of
neuron
- · Ability to respond to stimulus.
- · Ability to conduct a signal.
Structure of
neuron
There are three main
parts of neuron body.
- Dendrites (short thread-like projections which conduct nerve impulse towards cell body).
- Cell body (cytoplasm having large central nucleus)
- Axon (long, cylindrical process that conducts nerve impulse away from nerve impulse.
Myelin sheath
It is the laminated lipid sheath
which covers axons. Neurolemmocytes wraps
myelin sheath in layers and neurofibril
nodes separates the myelin sheath at regular intervals.
Types of
neurons;
Sensory Neurons
The neurons that carry information
from receptors or may act as receptor for detecting stimulus are called sensory
(receptors or afferent) neurons. They carry nerve impulse to inter neurons present
in the brain.
Inter Neurons
These neurons are integrating centers
where information present in the impulse is processed and then these neurons
send this processed information is send to effectors through motor neurons.
Motor Neurons
Motor neurons are those neurons
which carry processed information in the form of nerve impulse to effectors
which in result response.
